I'm so sorry to hear of your losses. The focus needs to shift from treatment to prevention and unfortunately as you noted above, cancer is a hugely political and profitable disease. Big Pharma rules the world and and a huge amount of money is made from people being sick. Disease is an industry and we need to be diligent in doing our own research and digging deeper to find out who is sponsoring all the various studies being published and what they have to gain.
Thank you for shedding light on the paraben issue. Once again your blog post is bang on.

I have been reading the above comments to this article - which was great! and I was confused why some of you don't question the ingredients in our cosmetics and personal care products. So maybe there isn't a list of studies and research done on the health risks associated on some ingredients in our products, but the numbers are out there as far as cancer rates are sky rocketing - in a much younger age group than you should see certain cancers, reproduction problems in baby boys, earlier puberty that can result in earlier cancers, skin problems, asthma, etc...the list could go on. Yes, I do think the way we eat doesn't help this either but there are issues with that too. Just like you question information from the EWG, did you think that maybe the research and studies aren't done because one, no one will take the time because it would be extensive and two, the information they would find out could cause the $50 billion dollar industry to go bankrupt? Who would want to fund a study or do one on their products that will put their company out of business?
Our skin is the biggest organ and yes it does have the ability to get rid of toxins. So you say that the ingredients found in these products that are bad and in no form should they be in there can't really harm us because they are in such small amounts - well the skin, liver, kidneys, etc. has a heck of a time filtering these toxins and chemicals because we are using these products every day and sometimes several times a day. These bad ingredients are toxic and cause the health problems they are causing because our bodies can't filter these small amounts because the small amounts have built up because of the daily use.
We are a cause and effect society. Nothing matters until there is a problem and then we have to figure out why it happened and then oh no! some company went out of business. Well maybe if they were honest in the first place...
I wonder sometimes what people wear in these chemistry labs at the big cosmetic companies as they are testing on those poor animals. The safety gear and then they expect us - conumers - to buy their product because it is promising this and that. And yes ladies, we do want the latest and greatest on what is going to make us thinner, younger, perfect skin, etc. but at what cost, eventually? I do think that is why you see a lot of people like myself going back to the basics and living more simple lives - being green and organic is nothing new (though you would swear it was) because of the cost of everything (and then a lot of it is not natural). Using products that come from the earth, growing your own food so you know where it comes from, etc...people are wanting to be healthy and make healthier choices.
The European nations may have been the first to put in a directive for safe cosmetics but Asian countries are there and have been fighting cosmetic companies and banning certain ones because of what they have found out with what are in products they have been using. Especially the ingredient-hydroquinone-which lightens the skin. We are not following Europe, they were the first ones to care about their people. We should be doing the same. We trust our government for many other things in our lives - we should have been able to trust them with this and hopefully soon we will be able to do that.
From safecosmetics.org ...The Act will also lift the cosmetics industry as a whole. While many large companies do not want to change, it is not helpful to the American cosmetics industry to be using decades-old formulations with known toxicity problems, and ignoring the new science that makes it clear that low-dose toxic chemical exposures are a health hazard. The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011 will bring the American cosmetics industry to the forefront of global competitiveness by setting a bottom line of safety all companies have to abide by, moving the industry as a whole away from the polluting chemistry of the past, and spurring the innovation of green chemistry and the development of the next generation of safer products that the world market is demanding – increasing consumer confidence in U.S.-made products and ensuring that we all have access to safe personal care products.
Wouldn't it be nice to be competitive with L'oreal, etc? It could be the thing that takes the US in a new direction, not just with cosmetics and personal care products but many other "greener" innovations.
I'm done ranting now. :-)
